Nigeria joins BRICS as partner under Brazil’s 2025 Leadership
The government of Brazil’s has announced on Friday 17th January, 2025 that Nigeria has been officially recognised as a partner nation within the BRICS bloc, highlighting the African nation’s growing influence in global cooperation and governance.
Brazil, which will hold the BRICS presidency in 2025, highlighted Nigeria’s significant role in advancing collaboration among Global South nations and promoting reforms in global governance structures—priorities that align closely with Brazil’s agenda.
“With the 6th largest population globally and the largest in Africa, as well as being one of the continent’s economic powerhouses, Nigeria shares strategic interests with BRICS members,” noted Brazil’s Foreign Ministry, Itamaraty.
Nigeria’s inclusion in BRICS adds to the bloc’s diverse network of partner countries, which already includes eight nations spanning Latin America, Eastern Europe, and Asia. This development underscores BRICS’ ongoing efforts to expand its global reach and deepen South-South cooperation.
BRICS, an International Organisation, is considered an alternative to the G7 states bloc of the world’s largest economies. it was initially made of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, has been pushing to expand in recent years as it grows in clout and has accepted other countries including Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates. The group also has a number of partner states, including Malaysia and Thailand.
