James Gunu, Togbe Afede XIV Rally Investors to Expand Kpeve Water Plant

Kpeve, Volta Region, July, 2026

The Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, and the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, Togbe Afede XIV, have initiated efforts to attract strategic investment to expand the production capacity of the Kpeve Water Pumping and Treatment Station as part of measures to address water supply challenges across the Volta Region.

The initiative took a significant step forward on Saturday, July 11, when executives of Strategic Initiatives Limited, representing Togbe Afede XIV, accompanied by a delegation of investors from the Chinese Africa Business Council, visited the Kpeve Water Pumping and Treatment Station to undertake a feasibility assessment for a proposed expansion of the facility.

During the visit, Station Manager Mr. Eric Avornyo briefed the delegation on the station’s operations, treatment processes, production capacity, and its critical role in supplying potable water to communities across the region.

The assessment is part of efforts by Hon. Gunu and Togbe Afede XIV to identify sustainable solutions to increase water production and improve access to safe and reliable water for residents.

Mr. Gunu explained that the engagement with Strategic Initiatives Limited and the Chinese Africa Business Council was aimed at exploring opportunities to expand the facility and strengthen water security in the region.

“This visit forms part of our continuous efforts to attract strategic investments that will strengthen water infrastructure, increase production capacity, and improve access to safe and reliable water for our people,” he stated.

The Kpeve Water Treatment Plant has an installed production capacity of 18,181 cubic metres per day (approximately four million gallons). However, the facility currently operates below capacity, producing an average of 11,272 cubic metres daily, compared with the estimated 23,580 cubic metres required to meet the water demands of Ho and surrounding communities.

The Regional Minister noted that government alone could not address all infrastructure needs, emphasising the importance of partnerships with the private sector and international investors to accelerate development.

He described the proposed investment as a critical intervention that could improve water supply reliability, support socio-economic growth, and enhance public health outcomes across beneficiary communities.

The Kpeve Water Treatment Plant serves the Volta Regional capital, Ho, supplying households, businesses, and key institutions. It also provides water to communities along the 30-kilometre transmission pipeline extending from Kpeve through South Dayi and parts of Afadzato Soth

The engagement also provided an opportunity for stakeholders to deliberate on the technical and investment prospects of the proposed expansion and its potential impact on the region’s water needs.

The delegation included the Member of Parliament for South Dayi and Majority Chief Whip, Hon. Rockson-Nelson Kwami Etse Deafeamekpor; South Dayi District Chief Executive, Hon. Courage Kwame Kokroko; and Afadzato South District Chief Executive, Hon. Manfred Tawiah.

The officials expressed confidence that expanding the Kpeve Water Pumping and Treatment Station would boost production capacity, strengthen water infrastructure, and ensure a more sustainable supply of potable water for households, institutions, and businesses across the Volta Region.

The proposed expansion is expected to position the facility to meet current and future water demands while reinforcing efforts by Hon. James Gunu and Togbe Afede XIV to deliver a lasting solution to the region’s water supply challenges.
