Mr Stan Xoese Dogbe, the deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Operations, has directed the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC) to commence the ecological restoration of reclaimed sections of the Kpeshie Lagoon following the removal of illegal structures from the wetland’s protected buffer zone.
The restoration exercise, to be undertaken in collaboration with the Forestry Commission and the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), will include the planting of coconut and other suitable tree species, as well as measures to safeguard and rehabilitate the fragile wetland ecosystem.
Mr Dogbe gave the directive at Laboma following a demolition exercise by the Post Flood Mitigation Task Force, which aims to restore flood-control infrastructure and protect critical water-retention areas across the Greater Accra Region.
He said the exercise was not merely intended to clear illegal structures but to restore the affected portions of the lagoon to their natural state and improve their capacity to retain floodwaters.
According to him, the restoration would also help prevent further encroachment and strengthen the resilience of the wetland against future flooding.
The Kpeshie Lagoon is considered one of Accra’s important flood-control and water-retention areas. However, years of reclamation, sand filling and construction within and around the wetland have reduced its natural water-holding capacity.
Following the clearance of the affected areas, authorities are expected to undertake debris removal, vegetation restoration and sustained environmental protection measures to support the recovery of the lagoon and improve its flood-mitigation function.
