The Assemblymember for the Old Ayoma Electoral Area in the Jasikan Municipality, Hon. Bismark Yirenkyi, has raised concerns over a critical shortage of teachers, warning that the situation is negatively affecting education delivery in the community.
Speaking to journalists on Friday, Mr. Yirenkyi said the lack of qualified teachers has forced many parents to withdraw their children and enrol them elsewhere, causing pupil numbers in local schools to fall.
Speaking to journalists, he said the challenge was particularly severe at the kindergarten level, where the only trained kindergarten teacher retired in 2021, leaving a community volunteer to manage an overcrowded classroom.
“The situation has become very worrying. Parents are taking their children out of our schools because there are simply not enough teachers. If urgent action is not taken, more children will be denied the quality education they deserve.”
Mr Yirenkyi added that female health workers with young children have threatened to leave the community because of the shortage of early‑childhood teachers. To cope with classroom congestion, the school has promoted some KG2 pupils to primary one and merged classes into a single room.
Mr Yirenkyi explained that the community’s basic school and health facility, which were constructed through communal labour with support from World Vision in 2014, currently have only four teachers, in addition to a community volunteer handling kindergarten classes.
He also disclosed that the Junior High School block was destroyed by fire, and the community’s workshop is currently being used as the JHS classroom.
Despite the challenges, the Assemblymember said the dedication of teachers had helped sustain academic performance, with Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results remaining relatively stable.

“Despite the dedication of the few teachers we have, they are overstretched. We are calling on the government to intervene urgently because every child in Old Ayoma deserves the same quality education as children elsewhere in Ghana.”
He urged the Ministry of Education and other relevant authorities to urgently post adequate teachers to Old Ayoma so that children in the area can access the quality education they deserve.
