Gunu Calls for Corporate Support to Boost Beach Soccer Development 

Mr. James Gunu, the Volta Regional Minister, has appealed to Corporate Ghana, sports and tourism investors, and other stakeholders to partner with the government in advancing the growth of Beach Soccer in the country. 

Mr. Gunu made the call during a visit to the Keta Beach Soccer Arena, where he graced the opening matches of the 2025/2026 Ghana Beach Soccer League Zone Two fixtures. 

In his remarks, the Minister emphasised the need for strategic partnerships to accelerate the sport’s development. 

“We will make the government seek collaboration and support from corporate bodies and tourism institutions to fund equipment, competitions, and player development. On this note, I would like to urge Corporate Ghana to support sports development in the country, particularly Beach Soccer.  

“Together, we will promote competition and create a platform to strengthen national leagues, regional tournaments, and international friendlies, while also driving tourism campaigns to popularize this unique sport,” Mr. Gunu said. 

The Minister reiterated that President John Mahama-led administration’s commitment to the promotion of lesser-known sporting disciplines, including Beach Soccer, which he described as increasingly popular among coastal communities such as Keta and its surrounding areas. 

“President Mahama is committed to developing sports infrastructure, including Beach Soccer. As part of our plans, the government will establish well-structured beach soccer arenas along Ghana’s coastal belt and on inland sand beaches to promote training, competition, and community engagement,” he assured. 

He outlined the government’s strategy for grassroots development and talent discovery, stressing the importance of capacity building, saying they will invest in training quality coaches, referees, and technical staff specialised in Beach Soccer to ensure professional standards and to create sustainable career pathways for the youth. 

The opening day of the new Ghana Beach Soccer League season witnessed exciting fixtures, with all six Zone Two teams showcasing their readiness and competitive spirit.  

In the thrilling encounters, Kedzi Miracle Stars narrowly edged out Ada Assurance with a 4–3 victory, while Havedzi Mighty Warriors overcame Tegbi Ocean Stars 4–2.  

The highlight of the day was Vodza Iron Breakers’ emphatic 4–0 triumph over Keta Sunsets BSC. 

To officially usher in the season, Mr. Gunu performed the ceremonial kick-off in the much-anticipated clash between Keta Sunsets and Vodza Iron Breakers, drawing loud cheers from the packed arena. 

He was accompanied by Mr Wisdom Seade, the Keta Municipal Assembly, Mr Nicholas Worlachie, and other Government and NDC party officials. 

As part of his gesture, he donated an amount of GHC2,000, alongside Mr Seade also donated GHC1,000 and GHC2,000 from the Member of Parliament  

Beach Soccer, introduced into Ghana over a decade ago, continues to gain recognition as a vibrant sport with immense potential for youth development, tourism promotion, and community cohesion, particularly in coastal towns such as Keta, where clubs like Keta Sunsets BSC and Havedzi Mighty Warriors have dominated the league.  

Stakeholders believe that with the right investment and corporate backing, Ghana could emerge as a formidable force on the African Beach Soccer stage and beyond.
