The Government of Ghana has declined an offer by MTN Ghana to donate GH¢20 million to support Ghanaians affected by recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement, said it had become aware of media reports suggesting that MTN Ghana was preparing the donation, reportedly following comments by the company’s Board Chairman, Dr. Ishmael Yamson.
While commending MTN for the gesture, the Government said it was unable to accept the offer because the Mahama administration had already made adequate provisions for the ongoing evacuation and reintegration of affected Ghanaians.
The Ministry said the position had earlier been communicated directly to MTN’s Board Chairman and Chief Executive Officer when they met the Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, on August 14, 2026.
Government, however, indicated its commitment to providing humanitarian evacuation and reintegration support to every Ghanaian brought back from harm’s way.
It also said it would publish a comprehensive account of the total cost of the evacuation exercise once it is completed, in the interest of transparency and accountability.
The Ministry further assured international businesses operating in Ghana of government’s commitment to creating a conducive business environment, stressing that the welfare of all Ghanaians remains its utmost priority.
