Gregory Afoko granted bail after years on remand

Gregory Afoko, a prime suspect in the murder of Mr Adams Mahama, NPP Upper East Regional Chairman, has finally been granted bail after almost a decade in detention

The Accra High Court set bail at GHS 500,000, with two sureties. The sureties are supposed to have fixed places of abode with one of them having a landed property. This landmark ruling comes after so many years of unsuccessful bail applications

Mr Gregory Afoko was arrested in 2015 in connection with Adams Mahama’s death in a brutal acid attack in Bolgatanga near his home. Since then, he has remained in police custody, raising public concerns about judicial delays and fair trial rights.

Despite multiple attempts by his legal team to secure bail, the court had consistently denied his requests—until now.

The trial which commenced in 2019 concluded in 2023. The jury on the trial however returned with a hung verdict on both counts of murder and conspiracy to murder against him. The court then ordered a retrial for Gregory Afoko. He was re-arrested after the proceedings and denied bail.

But, his lawyers moved the application calling on the the court to grant him bail pending trial on Friday.
