Dennis Miracles Aboagye, an aide to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, has argued that the government’s GH¢2 reduction in diesel prices has not provided meaningful relief to Ghanaians because fuel remains more expensive than it was before the current administration assumed office.
According to him, the focus should not be on the amount deducted from fuel prices but whether the intervention has significantly reduced the financial burden on consumers.
In response to the increasing fuel prices, particularly diesel, President John Dramani Mahama, on August 3, 2026, directed a GH¢2 reduction to ease the pressure on drivers.
Speaking on Eyewitness News, Mr Aboagye said although the government has introduced the reduction, the overall price of fuel at the pumps remains higher than what Ghanaians were paying previously.

“The question is not about how much he is removing. It is what impact the two cedis is making in the global picture,” he said.
He argued that even after the reduction, fuel prices remain a major contributor to the high cost of living, particularly through their impact on transportation and prices of goods and services.
“As we speak, even with the removal of the two cedis, fuel prices are still more expensive than they met it,” Mr Aboagye stated.
He said the government must be measured against the promises it made to Ghanaians, particularly the commitment to reduce the cost of living.
“The promise was a sacred one to the people of this country. He said he was going to make it cheaper, make it less expensive for the Ghanaian people,” he said.

Mr Aboagye also questioned why fuel prices remain high despite improvements in some economic indicators, including inflation and the exchange rate.
He argued that the reduction in fuel prices has not erased the wider impact of expensive petroleum products on households.
“The Ghanaian people are talking about the fact that the NDC came to meet a litre of fuel at the pumps at a certain price and today, even with the two cedis removed, it is more expensive than they met it,” he added.
Dennis Miracles Aboagye maintained that the government must focus on delivering tangible relief to citizens rather than relying on policy interventions that do not significantly change the economic realities faced by households.
