KARPOWERSHIP threatens shutdown over $370 million debt

Management of the KARPOWERSHIP company, an electricity power producer located at Aboadze in the Western Region has threatened to cease power supply over unsettled debts.
Karpowership, which produces about 450 megawatts of electricity to the national grid, is threatening to shut down its generation plant if the power distribution company, Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), fails to settle its debts which amount to over $370 million.
The company made this revelation at a meeting between Mr John Abdulai Jinapor the, Minister of Energy and Green Transitions, and officials of the Karpowership barge in Accra on Monday.
Though the company acknowledge the negative impact the shutdown will have on Ghanaians and the economy, they stated they are left with no choice to take the decision.
Mr John Abduai Jinapor in his response to the matter assured the company of the government’s commitment to making sure there is stability hence he said the government would establish a payment plan immediately to settle the outstanding debts owed Karpowership.
“We will prioritise making the required payments to ensure the continuous operation of the power generation company and engage in open and transparent communication with Karpowership,” he stated.
Mr Zeynep Harezi Yilmaz, Chief Commercial Officer of Karpowership, in briefing the minister, said as of December 2024, Karpowership received $39.60 million from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and $185.28 million from the Ministry of Finance meanwhile the company is owed over $370 million by the ECG. Mr Yilmaz called on the Government to make sure ECG cleared the accumulated invoices presented to it immediately.
