Ghana Protests Thomas Partey’s Visa Denial, Seeks Review Ahead of WC Opener

The Government of Ghana has formally protested Canada’s decision to deny a temporary residence visa to Black Stars midfielder Thomas Teye Partey, describing the move as unfair and raising concerns over due process and Ghana’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on June 13, 2026, Ghana stated that Canadian immigration authorities rejected Partey’s application on grounds of inadmissibility under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

According to the government, the decision is linked to ongoing criminal proceedings in the United Kingdom that have not resulted in any conviction or judicial finding of guilt. Ghana argued that relying on such unresolved allegations undermines the principle of presumption of innocence.

“The Government of Ghana reaffirms the fundamental legal principle of the presumption of innocence, a cornerstone of justice and due process in democratic societies,” the statement said.

The Foreign Ministry confirmed that an official note of protest has been submitted to Global Affairs Canada, with ongoing diplomatic engagement to seek a review of the decision. It also disclosed that Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has held discussions with Canadian officials, including the Canadian High Commissioner to Ghana.

While acknowledging Canada’s sovereign right to enforce its immigration laws, Ghana questioned the fairness and proportionality of the decision given the absence of a final court ruling.

The government further indicated readiness to pursue all diplomatic, legal, and administrative remedies, including possible judicial review at the Federal Court of Canada.

“Government further notes Mr. Partey’s selection for the upcoming FIFA World Cup and the significant national and global sporting considerations at stake, and therefore urges Canada to rescind its decision in the interest of fairness and cardinal principles of common law,” the statement added.

Ghana reaffirmed its commitment to strong bilateral relations with Canada and expressed hope for a swift and amicable resolution through continued diplomatic engagement.
