The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has expressed strong support and best wishes to the ten African nations competing at the FIFA World Cup 2026, describing their record participation as a significant achievement for the continent.
In a statement marking the start of the tournament, H.E. Youssouf said the unprecedented representation reflects the growing strength, talent, and competitiveness of African football on the global stage.
“This record level of African participation reflects the continued rise of African football and is a moment of continental pride,” he stated.
The AUC Chairperson noted that the World Cup provides an opportunity for Africans to unite behind their teams while promoting peace, friendship, and understanding among nations through sport.
