UK-Based NGO commissions modern toilet facility for Tegbi Ashiata school to improve sanitation

The African Adventures Foundation, a UK-based non-governmental organization (NGO) operating in Ghana, has officially handed over a newly constructed 12-unit toilet facility to the Tegbi Ashiata L/A Basic School in the Anloga District. The initiative, aimed at enhancing health and sanitation standards, is expected to provide a cleaner and safer environment for students, particularly young girls.
The handing-over ceremony, held a week ago, was led by Mr. Siva Vordzorgbe, Country Director of the foundation, and Mr. Dave Tuck, Chief Operations Officer.
Mr. Tuck explained that the project was executed under the foundation’s Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) initiative, which seeks to improve school sanitation while addressing challenges faced by girls during menstruation.
“Our organisation is dedicated to ensuring that children receive safe, secure, and quality education. This project was undertaken to create a conducive environment for both staff all and learners especially girls, so they can focus on their studies without worrying about hygiene issues,” he stated.

In an interview with Veritas News, Mr. Siva Vordzorgbe elaborated on the motivation behind the initiative.
“Our research shows that many young girls miss school during their menstrual period due to inadequate sanitary facilities and lack of access to menstrual products. This issue negatively impacts their education. As an NGO committed to the promotion of education and student welfare, we found it necessary to address this challenge through this project,” he emphasized.
Mr. Amekor Gershon, Headmaster of Tegbi Ashiata Basic School, expressed profound gratitude to the African Adventures Foundation for the intervention, assuring that the facility would be well-maintained to serve its intended purpose.
“This facility is a game-changer for our students. It will help keep them in school, especially the girls who previously struggled with hygiene-related challenges,” Mr Amekor noted.

The newly constructed state-of-the-art washroom consists of 12 water closet toilets, six for boys and six for girls each equipped with a 1000-litre water storage tank and a pumping system to ensure constant water supply.
Beyond this project, the African Adventures Foundation has been actively supporting educational and healthcare initiatives in the Anloga District. Some of their notable contributions include the recent construction of a detention room at Tegbi Clinic, education support projects at Tegbi E.P. and Dornorgbor School, and assistance to other eleven other schools in the region.
