At least nine people have been confirmed dead following severe flooding that hit the capital city of Ghana, Accra, and its environs on Monday after hours of torrential rainfall.
The floods, which also affected parts of Tema, submerged homes, shops, and vehicles, leaving residents stranded in several communities including Alajo, Achimota, Adabraka, Kwame Nkrumah Circle among other areas.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service, the fatalities were confirmed based on reports from officers deployed across affected areas.
“So at this time now, the confirmable or confirmed figures that I have, the only case is in the case of about nine people,” a member of the Public Relations Department of the Service, Mr. Alex King Nartey, said.

He added that rescue operations are still ongoing and further details will be communicated as recovery efforts continue.
Emergency teams are still working in flood-hit communities, with unverified reports suggesting that about six people are missing following the disaster.
Authorities say the situation remains fluid as search-and-rescue operations intensify across the affected areas.
