Nitiwul warns NPP: internal divisions could lead to election Loss in 2028

Dominic Nitiwul, the Member of Parliament for the Bimbila constituency in the Northern Region, has voiced his strong concerns about the New Patriotic Party (NPP), warning that internal divisions could negatively affect their chances in the 2028 general elections.
He said that while there is still time to resolve the party’s internal issues before the next election, failing to do so could lead to prolonged opposition. “We’ve been allowed to communicate with the electorate, but if internal conflicts over who should be an MP or the next president continue, we will end up with the same outcome,” Mr Nitiwul warned.
He made this revelation during an interview with media men in Accra
Mr Nitiwul also pointed to the unity within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as a key factor in their success, noting that the NDC maintained solidarity behind one candidate, John Mahama, from 2016 to 2024, avoiding internal conflicts like allegations of corruption or state capture.
Reflecting on the NPP’s performance, he believes the party was fortunate that their supporters chose not to vote, rather than casting their ballots for the NDC or Mahama.
“Voter apathy had many causes within the primaries, the behaviour of party officials, and conflicts with MPs and internal primaries all contributed. We should be thankful that our supporters didn’t turn to the NDC. Perhaps they simply didn’t favour Mahama or the NDC, and that worked in our favour,” he explained.
The former defence minister expressed concern over the premature discussions about the party’s next flagbearer just a month after the election. He went on to advise against the ongoing discussions on who should become the party’s next flagbearer and issues of blame games among NPP senior members warning anything said now could affect the party’s chances in coming events.
