Dr Johnson Asiama nominated governor of Bank of Ghana- Presidency

Accra, January 31, 2025 –President John Dramani Mahama has officially nominated Dr. Johnson Asiama to assume the position of Governor of the Bank of Ghana. This announcement follows the acceptance of a formal request by the current Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, to proceed on terminal leave, effective February 3, 2025, leading up to his retirement on March 28, 2025.

This was contained in a statement signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Acting Spokesperson to the President, who praised Dr. Asiama’s proven commitment to implementing sound monetary policies and programs fostering a stable financial system to drive economic growth in Ghana.

In a related development, The Bank of Ghana has also issued an official statement acknowledging Dr. Ernest Addison’s decision to proceed on terminal leave from February 3, 2025, culminating in his retirement on March 28, 2025. Dr. Addison, who has served as Governor since his appointment on April 3, 2017, was reappointed for a second term on March 29, 2021, under the Bank of Ghana Act, 2002 (Act 612).

The Bank of Ghana expressed gratitude for Dr. Addison’s dedicated and distinguished service to the institution and the nation, extending best wishes for a restful retirement. Dr. Addison’s tenure has been marked by significant contributions to the stability of Ghana’s financial sector.

The nomination of Dr Asiama as the next Governor marks a significant transition in the central bank’s leadership, with expectations of continuity and progress in Ghana’s financial and economic policies.

Dr. Johnson Asiama, an accomplished economist and former Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana from 2016 to 2017, holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Economics from the University f Southampton, UK. With over 23 years of experience at the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Asiama has demonstrated expertise in monetary policy formulation, financial stability regulation, and economic research. His nomination is subject to approval by the Council of State.
