Residents of Keta Central hold 2nd town hall meeting, charge authorities to petition for good road networks

The people of Keta Central in the Keta Municipality have held their second 2024 townhall meeting with their leaders to deliberate on matters of progress in the area

The meeting which was held at the market square Sunday afternoon had more than 100 residents and community leaders present discussing issues in thematic areas such as sanitation, health, education, youth development and security.

Some major issues raised by residents were, the abandonment of some projects such as the “One million dollar per constituency” toilet projects in the market for over four years now, and how the Keta township roads were scratched and left unattended to for over a year now and the dilapidated nature of some sessions of the main Keta market.

They then charged the assemblymember and his unit committee members to quickly intervene in those issues for them while the youth promised to throw onto the streets to demonstrate if nothing tangible is heard within weeks, particularly on the bad road network.

“The amount of dust we endure every day has been dangerous to our health ever since they spoiled the road, if nothing is done, we shall react,” One shop owner lamented

On sanitation, Mr Gabriel Dziedzorm Dzikunu, Assemblymember for the area during his presentations called on natives to prioritise issues of sanitation by asking them to engage in periodic communal labours and beach cleanups. He also called on animal rearers to help keep their mammals in pens to avoid their indiscriminate loitering of community places and asked residents to avoid dumping refuse at creeksides and sea shores but rather patronize official refuse dumps. In addition, he appealed to benevolent natives to support them with working tools to aid their communal labour.

On security issues, Togbi James-Ocloo V, Dufia of Keta, called on all landlords and landladies to keep proper records of their tenants, monitor their movements and report any suspicious activities noticed for their safety and to reduce robbery cases. The assemblymember also pledged to replace old non-functioning streetlights within days to enhance proper visibility during the night.

The leadership of the Keta Youth Association (KeYA) led by their President, Mr Worlali Rhussia also used the opportunity to advise the youth against the rise in immoral acts such as thievery, smoking, deviancy and indiscipline in the community, he called on parents to strictly monitor their children against bad peer influence and provide them the necessary support for social survival.

The residents were also sensitised on the announced Akosombo Dam spillage and its effects.

Togbi James-Ocloo V, Dufia of Keta who chaired the meeting thanked the residents for their unwavering support to them as community leaders.
“It is your continuous support that motivates us to serve you diligently, all we ask for is some support with high energy to restore Keta to its past glory as we all wanted,” Togbi said

Keta, the capital of the Keta Municipal District and administrative capital of the Anlo State has a population of about 60,000 with its suburbs such as Kedzikofe, Abutiakofe, Dzelukofe, Tettekofe, Vui, Adzido, Vodza and other smaller communities.

The town hosts the main Keta market, two public basic schools (Keta EP and Keta AME Zion), the Fort Prinzenstein and the Nursing and Midwifery Training College (NMTC) alongside major private tourist centres.
It used to be an economic hub in the Region but currently lives in its shadows as a result of sea erosion effects and brain drain due to unemployment.
