Statue of former President Akufo-Addo in Sekondi vandalized again

The statue of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, situated at the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi, has been destroyed by unidentified individuals.

According to police sources, they were alerted to the incident and promptly arrived at the scene. The statue, which was heavily damaged from the head down to the knee area and ultimately toppled, was reportedly vandalised at around 1:30 a.m. on January 13, 2025.

This marks the second incident involving the statue in recent months. Initially unveiled on November 6, 2024, to honour the former president, the statue had sustained damage shortly after its installation. In December 2024, repairs were undertaken to address a large hole in one of its legs, an issue that sparked speculation about the cause, with theories ranging from intentional vandalism to structural deficiencies.

The December repairs were carried out on December 18, 2024, Despite its restoration, the statue has continued to stir controversy within the community, with many questioning its relevance and prioritisation over more critical developmental needs.

The motive behind this latest act of destruction remains unclear. While some suspect deliberate sabotage, others argue that flaws in the statue’s design or materials might have contributed to its repeated damage. The incident has reignited debate among residents about the symbolism and value of the monument.

Authorities are yet to release further details as investigations into the incident continue.
