Mahama calls for early preparations for Black Stars targeting World Cup and AFCON titles

President John Dramani Mahama has called for early preparations towards Ghana’s next FIFA World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaigns, expressing confidence that the Black Stars can win both competitions if the current team is maintained.

The President made the remarks on Friday, July 17, 2026, during an inspection of the Ho Sports Stadium as part of his Resetting Ghana tour of the Volta Region.

President Mahama praised the senior men’s national team for exceeding expectations at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, noting that the team performed better than many had predicted.

“We need to start preparing for the next World Cup. Nobody gave them a chance, but the Black Stars did well. People predicted they would crash out at the group stage, but they managed to get into the Round of 32,” he said.

He said maintaining the current squad and ensuring continuity within the technical team could help Ghana achieve greater success at future tournaments.

“I am sure if we keep this team and persuade the coach to stay, by the next World Cup or AFCON, we can claim those two competitions,” President Mahama added.

The President’s comments come after the Black Stars defied expectations at the 2026 FIFA World Cup by progressing to the Round of 32, a performance that has renewed optimism among football fans across the country.

President Mahama was in the Volta Region for a two-day working visit to inspect development projects and engage stakeholders on government policies and programmes.
