Alleged assault: GNAT threatens WASSCE boycott over arrest of Nyinahini SHS teacher

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) in the Ashanti Region has threatened to boycott the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and stage protests if a colleague detained following an altercation with a student is not released from custody.

The Association said Tuesday that the teacher who serves as a hostel caretaker at Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School in the Atwima Mponua District remained in police custody after an incident involving a final-year student.

In a statement signed by its Regional Secretary, D.K. Atakora, the union expressed concern over the teacher’s continued detention and the manner in which the case was being handled.

GNAT called on the Ghana Police Service’s Atwima Mponua Command to grant the teacher immediate bail and urged the Ghana Education Service (GES) and school authorities to ensure due process is followed.

The union warned that failure to release the teacher by Wednesday would result in industrial action that could affect the conduct of the WASSCE in the district.

“Should the teacher not be granted bail by tomorrow, GNAT Ashanti Region will be compelled to direct teachers of Nyinahin Catholic SHS and all teachers in the district to boycott the ongoing WASSCE examinations,” the statement said.

The association further threatened demonstrations, saying teachers would wear red armbands and embark on protest marches to register their displeasure with the authorities.

The threat raises concerns about potential disruptions to the examinations, which are currently being written by final-year secondary school students across Ghana and other West African countries.

GNAT said it remained committed to protecting the welfare and rights of teachers while promoting discipline in schools but expected authorities to act swiftly to prevent an escalation of the dispute.

Police and education authorities had not publicly commented on the union’s demands at the time of reporting.
