Madam Abla Dzifa Gomashie, Member of Parliament for Ketu South, has supported farmers in the municipality with farm inputs to boost agricultural production and improve household livelihoods.
The materials include 2,000 bags of 60-kilogram fertiliser, a donation which forms part of her efforts to support local economic development, and is expected to provide relief to farmers ahead of the farming season by reducing the cost burden associated with agricultural inputs.
Presenting the items, Madam Gomashie said the support reflected her belief in empowering people with resources that could help them become economically self-reliant.
“I believe in teaching people how to fish rather than simply giving them fish. Supporting our farmers with the inputs they need is an investment in their ability to produce, earn income and support their families,” she said.
The MP, who also doubles as the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, says she had previously supported individual farmers with farm inputs but described the latest intervention as her second large-scale fertiliser distribution in the constituency.
According to her, investment in agriculture had broader implications for the local economy, stressing that productive farmers could contribute significantly to household incomes, food security and economic activity in their communities.
The fertiliser was distributed across the municipality, with each of the 41 electoral wards receiving 15 bags each, while each zone received 28 bags. The three traditional areas in the municipality also received 100 bags each for distribution among farmers within their respective communities.
Madam Gomashie also provided financial assistance to help beneficiaries transport the fertiliser from the distribution points to their homes and communities.
As part of the intervention, the MP also presented 10 boxes of streetlights to each of the three traditional areas to support community security.
She explained that the streetlights were intended to improve visibility and security, particularly as communities prepared for their annual traditional festivals and other social activities.
The beneficiaries expressed appreciation for the support and pledged to put the fertiliser to productive use to improve their farm yields.
One of the beneficiary farmers said: “This support has come at a time when the cost of farming inputs is putting pressure on many farmers. The fertiliser will help us cultivate our farms and improve our yields. We are grateful and will ensure that it is used for its intended purpose.”
The intervention is expected to benefit farmers across the municipality while contributing to efforts to strengthen agricultural production and household livelihoods in Ketu South.
