Godsway Mensah Elected Keta Municipal GFD President to Champion Disability Inclusion

Keta (V/R) August 06, 2026- Mr Godsway Mensah has been elected President of the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD) in the Keta Municipality, following an election organised by the Keta Municipal Assembly through its Department of Social Welfare and Community Development.

The election, held on Thursday, August 6, 2026, at the Keta Municipal Assembly Hall, brought together delegates from various Organisations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs), representatives of disability groups, stakeholders, members of the Electoral and Organising Committee, and other invited dignitaries.

Held under the theme, “Strengthening Disability Inclusion Through Democratic Representation and Effective Advocacy,” the exercise was aimed at giving persons with disabilities a stronger voice and more effective representation in local governance and decision-making.

The Head of the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, Mr Fred Selorm Kasue, described the election as an important step towards strengthening the participation of persons with disabilities in decisions that affect their lives.

He stressed that “Persons with disabilities should not be treated merely as beneficiaries of development programmes but as important partners whose experiences and perspectives must inform policies, programmes and development decisions,” Mr Kasue said

Mr Mensah, following his election, pledged to work closely with all OPD groups in the municipality while drawing on the experience of former executives to build greater unity and strengthen inclusion, advocacy and development within the disability movement.

He will be supported by Miss Sandra Doamekpor, who was elected Vice President; Mr Elorm Tamakloe, Youth Representative; and Madam Peace Sabah, Gender Representative.

The newly elected leadership is expected to serve as a bridge between persons with disabilities and local authorities, helping to ensure that concerns around accessibility, social protection, livelihoods, participation and other issues affecting persons with disabilities receive sustained attention.

Beyond the election, participants received practical education aimed at strengthening their capacity to advocate for the rights and interests of persons with disabilities.

Mr Godwin Kumah of the Eye-to-Eye Foundation facilitated a session on effective advocacy for disability organisations, while Madam Elikplim Klu Afua, Volta Regional President of the GFD, briefed participants on the federation’s Constitution, election guidelines and the responsibilities of municipal representatives in relation to issues of Disability

Mr Robert Kotey Ashie, Unit Head at the Department of Social Welfare, in an interaction with veritasnewsgh.com, urged the newly elected representatives and leaders of disability groups to see their positions as a responsibility to serve rather than merely titles.

He called on them to strengthen collaboration, accountability, communication and advocacy among disability organisations across the municipality.

The programme was attended by key officials of the Keta Municipal Assembly, including the Social Services Chairman, Hon. Noah Yao Agbemazi, as well as representatives of disability organisations, traditional leaders, the media and other stakeholders.

The election renewed the opportunity for persons with disabilities within Keta Municipality to organise around common concerns, engage more effectively with duty bearers and contribute directly to decisions and development initiatives affecting their communities and interests.
