What Caused Ghana’s Nationwide Power Outage? GRIDCo Opens Investigation

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) says a power system disturbance disrupted electricity supply across parts of the country in the early hours of Wednesday, July 29, 2026.
According to a press statement issued Wednesday Morning, the incident occurred at approximately 3:11 a.m. when some generating plants on the National Interconnected Transmission System tripped simultaneously, resulting in widespread power interruptions.
GRIDCo said it has activated its system restoration procedures, with engineers and system operators working alongside power sector stakeholders to restore electricity as quickly and safely as possible.
The company also announced that a comprehensive technical investigation is underway to determine the cause of the disturbance and apologised to the public for the inconvenience, assuring affected customers that updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
