A tipper truck has crashed into a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus carrying about 11 lower primary school children on the Dzorwulu–Accra Mall stretch, leaving several school children injured.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), in a video shared on Facebook, confirmed that the crash involved the tipper truck and the school bus, which was reportedly transporting children returning from an excursion.
Eyewitnesses confirmed to Citinews that one child is currently in ICU at the Police Hospital while the remaining 10 children are receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital.
Assistant Divisional Officer (ADO I) Alex King Nartey of the GNFS said the tipper truck rammed into the rear of the Sprinter bus, although the exact cause of the accident had yet to be established.
“This is the Fiesta Royale to Accra Mall stretch, where a tipper truck has run into a minibus containing children,” he said.
Footage from the scene showed the severity of the collision, with visible blood stains inside the bus, a child’s school bag left behind, and extensive damage to both vehicles.
ADO I Nartey said personnel from the GNFS National Headquarters Rescue Team had arrived at the scene to assess the situation and work to separate the vehicles involved.
“It looks like it is a Sprinter bus that was containing school children. It is believed that they had gone for an excursion, and this is the level of the impact,” he added.
Authorities are yet to confirm the number of people injured, the condition of the children, or whether any fatalities have been recorded.
Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing as emergency responders continue their assessment of the scene.
ADO 1 Nartey said officers from the National Headquarters Rescue Team had arrived at the scene to assess the situation and work to separate the vehicles involved in the crash.
“It looks like it is a Sprinter bus that was containing school children. It is believed that they had gone for an excursion, and this is the level of the impact,” he added.
Authorities are yet to provide further details on the number of casualties, the condition of the children, or whether any fatalities have been recorded.
The cause of the accident is also yet to be determined as emergency responders continue their assessment.
