Prof. Godfred A. Bokpin has called on Ghana to explore the IMF’s Resilience and Sustainability Facility as a way of securing concessionary funding to address climate change, coastal erosion and environmental degradation.
Speaking at the workshop for journalists, he said Ghana could combine that facility with the IMF’s policy support instrument to strengthen its response to environmental challenges. He argued that the country needed expert support and long-term financing to deal with problems such as coastal erosion, especially in Accra.
Prof. Bokpin noted that Ghana remained vulnerable to climate-related damage and warned that delaying action would only make future costs higher. He added that although the current programme arrangement is not funded, Ghana is still under an IMF programme and should take advantage of available options to secure more sustainable support.
The IMF provides climate support primarily through the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF), which is funded by the Resilience and Sustainability Trust (RST). The facility offers long-term, affordable financing (with 20-year maturities and a 10.5-year grace period) to help vulnerable, low-income, and middle-income countries tackle structural challenges like climate change
