The National Peace Council (NPC) has inaugurated a nine-member Joint Monitoring and Implementation Committee to oversee the implementation of the Nkwanta Declaration and support efforts towards sustaining peace in Nkwanta and surrounding communities.
The committee, inaugurated by the Chairman of the NPC Governing Board, Most Rev. Emmanuel Kofi Fianu, comprises representatives of the Adele, Akyode and Challa ethnic groups, the Zongo Chief, the Oti Regional Peace Council and the Nkwanta South Municipal Assembly.
Addressing the members, Most Rev. Fianu urged them to discharge their responsibilities with integrity, fairness and courage, stressing that their work would be critical to consolidating peace and fostering trust among the various stakeholders.
“Your mandate is to safeguard the gains of the Nkwanta Declaration by serving with integrity, fairness and an unwavering commitment to peace.”
The committee is mandated to monitor the implementation of the 13-point Nkwanta peace agreement, identify emerging threats to peace, facilitate dialogue among stakeholders and submit regular progress reports to the National Peace Council.
The Executive Secretary of the NPC, Dr George Amoh, underscored the importance of effective monitoring and accountability in sustaining the gains made through the peace process.
“Peace agreements endure only when they are effectively monitored and all parties remain accountable to their commitments.”
Mr Peter King Gyinae, Chairman of the Oti Regional Peace Council, also encouraged members to work diligently and collaboratively to consolidate peace and stability in the municipality.
Youth representatives, traditional leaders and other stakeholders pledged their support for the committee and reaffirmed their commitment to promoting peaceful coexistence and sustainable development in Nkwanta.
