Government grants GH¢5,500 support package to each Ghanaian evacuated from South Africa
The Government of Ghana has announced a GH¢5,500 support package for each Ghanaian evacuated from South Africa following the recent xenophobic attacks.
Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, July 27, 2026, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, said the cash support forms part of a broader “Welcome Home Financial Package” designed to help returnees reintegrate into society.
According to the Minister, the package is intended to help returnees purchase essential household items, cover transportation costs, and meet other immediate needs as they resettle in Ghana.
“You are not coming home as refugees or destitute individuals; you are coming back as royals of this nation. This GH¢5,500 support ensures that no returnee starts their resettlement journey empty-handed,” Mr Ablakwa said while welcoming the latest batch of 150 evacuees.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the financial assistance is part of a wider reintegration programme that includes employment, business support and psychosocial care.
Under a job placement initiative, government has secured about 200 employment opportunities for returnees through partnerships with private sector companies.
The Ministry also said all returnees are being enrolled in a specialised database to connect them with start-up support, vocational training institutions and entrepreneurial financing opportunities.
As part of the reintegration process, returnees are receiving free psychological counselling upon arrival to help them cope with the trauma of displacement and violence.
Ministry officials further confirmed that all evacuees underwent security screening by South African authorities before departure, dismissing rumours circulating on social media that some were wanted criminals. According to the Ministry, none of the returnees is on any international wanted list.
Mr Ablakwa said government remains committed to seeking justice for Ghanaians who suffered losses during the attacks.
He disclosed that Ghana is compiling comprehensive case files to pursue compensation for citizens whose businesses, shops, goods and other investments were destroyed during the anti-immigrant violence in South Africa through appropriate international legal channels.
