Ghana generates US$15 million from gold exchange transactions – Finance Minister

Ghana generated US$15 million from gold exchange transactions in the first half of 2026, Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Baah Forson has announced while presenting the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review to Parliament on Thursday.

The Minister said the figure represents proceeds from the government’s continued use of gold to support foreign exchange inflows and stabilize key sectors of the economy in the first half of 2026. “Mr. Speaker, as part of measures to strengthen our reserves and reduce pressure on the dollar, the government, through the Bank of Ghana and relevant agencies, has generated $15 million from gold exchange transactions between January and June 2026,” Dr. Ato Forson told the House.

Dr. Ato Forson explained that the gold exchange initiative is part of broader efforts to leverage Ghana’s natural resources to support the cedi, build buffers, and finance critical imports including petroleum products and other commodities. The program involves the aggregation and sale of domestically mined gold, with proceeds channelled into the Bank of Ghana’s reserves and used to support foreign exchange needs for essential imports.

“By monetizing part of our gold production, we are able to inject much-needed foreign exchange into the economy without over-relying on external borrowing,” the Minister said. He added that the intervention has contributed to relative stability in the exchange rate and has provided the central bank with additional room to intervene in the forex market when necessary.

Dr Forson said the US$15 million generated from gold exchange transactions forms part of government’s strategy to diversify sources of foreign exchange and reduce vulnerabilities to external shocks.

He noted that the first six months of 2026 saw improved revenue performance, declining inflation, and stronger reserve buffers compared to the same period last year. “Ghana’s economy continues on a path of recovery and consolidation.

The gold exchange proceeds, together with improved cocoa receipts and remittances, have helped us meet our external obligations and support the local currency,” he said.
