Dutch referee dies weeks after being dropped from World Cup

The international football community is mourning the loss of Rob Dieperink. The Dutch referee died at the age of 38. The Royal Dutch Football Association, the KNVB confirmed the passing of the veteran official on July 13, 2026. His death comes two months after his removal from the officiating list for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Authorities have not disclosed a cause of death.

Legal Investigation and FIFA Departure

Dieperink’s professional career faced significant disruption earlier this year. In April 2026, the Metropolitan Police in the United Kingdom arrested the official following a report of a sexual assault against a teenage boy in Croydon. The authorities conducted a thorough investigation, which included the review of CCTV footage and the examination of digital devices. The Metropolitan Police ultimately determined that the evidence did not meet the required legal threshold. Consequently, the force closed the case and stated that no further action would be taken.

Despite the case being dismissed, FIFA removed Dieperink from its list of video assistant referee officials for the 2026 World Cup in May. Dieperink maintained his innocence throughout the ordeal. In an interview with the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, he expressed his frustration regarding the turn of events. He stated, “It saddens me greatly that I have been wrongly accused.” Regarding the police process, he added, “From the beginning, I have fully cooperated in the police investigation and also immediately gave full openness to Fifa, Uefa and the KNVB.” He further noted his gratitude for the support from his home association. He admitted, “It is a pity that Fifa has decided not to appoint me for the World Cup, of course I am disappointed about that.”

Tributes from the Football World

The KNVB expressed deep sorrow over the loss of a prominent figure in Dutch officiating. Dieperink had been a professional referee since 2011 and served in the Eredivisie since 2017. He was also a fixture in high-stakes European matches, serving as a VAR official at Euro 2024, the 2024 Europa League final, and previously at the Olympic Games.

In a formal statement, the KNVB honored his contributions to the sport. “With Rob, we lose a highly valued referee, but above all a kind and dedicated colleague,” the association wrote. “Our thoughts go out to his family, friends, and everyone who held him dear. We wish them much strength and support in processing this great loss.”

FIFA also issued a statement regarding the official’s death. “It is with great sadness that FIFA has learned of the passing of Dutch match official Rob Dieperink,” the governing body said. “On behalf of the entire football community, we extend our sincerest condolences to his family and friends and the Dutch Football Association. May he rest in peace.”

A Complex Legacy

The sudden death of a young official who was recently at the center of international scrutiny highlights the often-unseen pressures faced by those in the spotlight of elite sports. While the legal system cleared him of wrongdoing, his departure from the world’s biggest tournament remained a defining, difficult chapter in his final months. As the community remembers his professional achievements and his contributions to the game, his passing leaves a profound sense of loss for his colleagues and loved ones.
