River Tordzi contaminated by agrochemical spill-VRCC warns

Volta Regional Council Warns of River Tordze Contamination

The Volta Regional Coordinating Council has issued a warning regarding the contamination of River Tordze, a tributary of the Volta River, following an agrochemical spill into Tove, Togo.

The spill occurred on February 18, 2025, when a truck carrying the chemicals was involved in an accident.

Authorities stress the need for a thorough assessment of contamination levels before declaring the water safe for human use.

Residents of affected areas, including the Agortime-Ziope District and downstream communities, have been advised to refrain from drinking, fishing, or using the river for irrigation and washing.

Municipal and District Assemblies have been instructed to provide alternative water sources while the situation is being addressed. The council urges the public to help disseminate this information to prevent health risks.
