President Mahama revokes appointments of MMDCEs

Accra, Ghana – In a directive issued on January 8, 2025, the President of the Republic, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, has revoked the appointments of all Chief Executives of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) as well as Assembly Members appointed under relevant sections of the Local Governance Act.

The directive, communicated in an official letter signed by Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President, cites powers vested in the President under the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936) and its amendment (Act 940).

The letter instructs that, in the interim, respective Coordinating Directors of the affected MMDAs are to assume responsibility as acting Chief Executives until new substantive appointments are made.

Copies of the communication were addressed to the Vice President and the Chief of Staff, both at Jubilee House, Accra.

The revocation takes immediate effect, with the directive calling for compliance to ensure the seamless administration of local governance.
