NUGS Announces Demonstration Against WAEC Over Withheld WASSCE 2024 Results
The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has officially informed the Greater Accra Regional command of the Ghana Police Service of an intended demonstration against the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) over issues in connection with to the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results.
The planned demonstration scheduled for happen Tuesday, 25th February 2025, from 9:00 am., will start from Obra Spot, Circle, Accra.
According to the Union, they are protesting the decisiin of WAEC to withhold and cancel results for some candidates who sat for the 2024 WASSCE, an actions which they claim have negatively impacted those students.
NUGS is positing that, the delay and cancellation of such results have denied affected students opportunity to gain admission into public tertiary institutions, as the admission processes have been completed already.
They also said those student are unable to register for remedial examinations, because WAEC had closed registration on January 7, 2025, before the release of the results.
In a statement signed by the President of NUGS, Daniel Korley Botchway, the union described WAEC’s actions as an injustice and an abuse of discretionary powers.
The union has called on all students, parents, and stakeholders to join them in the protest, saying that they need to safeguard students’ rights to education, calling for urgent intervention to resolve the situation and ensure affected students receive a fair opportunity to continue their educational ladder smoothly.
