Akatsi (Volta Region) June, 2026
A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Akatsi South Constituency, Mr. Derek Elikplim Hoggar, has called for restraint and a return to internal democratic principles following recent chants of “Ken Must Go” by some party members at the Alisa Hotel in Accra.
In a strongly worded rejoinder, Mr Hoggar expressed concern that such public displays of dissent could undermine party unity and provide political advantage to opponents. While acknowledging the democratic right to free expression, he stressed that party members must act in ways that protect the image and stability of the NPP.
He referenced the legacy of the party’s founding figures, including JB Danquah, Dr. K. A. Busia, and Prof. Adu Boahen, as well as former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, noting that the party’s tradition is built on structured debate rather than public confrontation.
According to him, internal disagreements should be addressed through formal party structures rather than public demonstrations that risk division.
“While democracy grants every member the right to expression, true patriotism demands we weigh our words against the survival of the elephant we all claim to love,” he stated.
He further warned against what he described as divisive conduct that could weaken the party ahead of future electoral contests.
“Let conference halls, not streets, be where disagreements are settled. Let records, not courts, be where grievances are documented,” he added.
Hoggar, who is aspiring to become the constituency secretary, also urged the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) to investigate the incident at the Alisa Hotel to determine whether those involved are bona fide members or external infiltrators, and to apply appropriate sanctions where necessary.
He emphasized that safeguarding the party’s unity and image is essential as it prepares for future political battles, including the 2028 general elections.
Background
Tensions erupted during a New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Executive Committee meeting at the Alisa Hotel in Accra on Thursday June 25 after a group of demonstrators were heard chanting “Ken Must Go” outside the venue, prompting a confrontation with security personnel.
The incident is believed to be linked to internal party disagreements following discussions on petitions against former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, amid ongoing concerns over his recent public criticisms of the party.
