Mahama directs NDC MPs to nominate Bagbin as speaker of 9th Parliament
Accra, Ghana – President-elect John Dramani Mahama has formally instructed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Leadership to nominate the Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin as Speaker of the 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic.
This directive was issued after consultations with the party’s National Executive and Parliamentary Leadership.
The announcement, made in a statement dated Sunday, January 5, 2025, highlighted the extensive parliamentary experience and service of Rt. Hon. Bagbin.
Over his career, he has served as a Member of Parliament for the Nadwoli constituency, rising through the ranks as Minority and Majority Leader before becoming Speaker of the 8th Parliament.
President-elect Mahama emphasized that Rt. Hon. Bagbin’s depth of knowledge and experience would be instrumental in steering the legislature at a critical juncture in Ghana’s democratic and legislative development. Mahama expressed confidence that under Bagbin’s stewardship, Parliament would be further strengthened to effectively fulfill its oversight responsibilities.
The statement was signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Special Aide to the President-elect.
Rt. Hon. Bagbin’s nomination reflects a continuation of his leadership in Parliament, following his historic election as the Speaker of the 8th Parliament, where he became the first Speaker to come from the opposition party.
His leadership during his previous tenure was marked by a commitment to fostering parliamentary independence and strengthening democratic governance.
Many Ghanaian view this move as part of President-elect Mahama’s broader strategy to consolidate NDC’s influence in the 9th Parliament, ensuring effective governance and collaboration within the legislature.
The swearing-in of the 9th Parliament and the election of its Speaker are expected to take place Monday 6th January 2025 as Ghana transitions into a new administration.
