Keta Youth Association refutes allegations of youth involvement in Demolition Incident

The Keta Youth Association has strongly denied reports suggesting that unidentified youth from Keta were involved in the recent demolition of structures, including an uncompleted building owned by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Keta, Hon. Emmanuel Gemegah.

In a statement addressing the incident that occurred on the morning of December 29, 2024, in Keta Central and Adzido (Aflasco), the association refuted the claims and clarified the events.

Misleading Media Reports

According to the association, the reports connecting the youth of Keta to the demolition exercise are baseless and misleading. It emphasized that neither residents nor youth from Keta were involved in the destruction of properties.

Details of the Demolition

The association revealed that the demolition was carried out by two heavy-duty machines under the direction of an individual named Togbi Akwaah from Alakple. Akwaah allegedly acted on instructions from the Loafe clan of Anlo, led by Togbi Wenya III, who claim ownership of the Kedzi to Keta reclaimed land. This land dispute is currently being litigated in the Sogakope Court.

Approximately 20 structures were affected during the demolition exercise, with Mr. Gemegah’s uncompleted building being among them.

Youth Intervention

Contrary to the allegations, the youth of Keta intervened to stop further destruction. They also apprehended one of the machine operators and Togbi Akwaah, handing them over to the police for further investigation.

Commitment to Law and Justice

The Keta Youth Association reaffirmed its commitment to the rule of law and due process, emphasizing that the youth of Keta are law-abiding citizens who would not engage in illegal activities. It expressed confidence in the legal system to address any irregularities concerning the Keta Sea Defense reclaimed lands and to hold individuals accountable where necessary.

Call for Calm and Condemnation of Unlawful Actions

The association condemned the unauthorized demolition of structures and extended sympathy to those affected. It urged all residents of Anloland, the Keta Municipality, and Keta Central to remain calm while law enforcement investigates the incident.

“We stand committed to ensuring peace and justice prevail. Together, let us work toward a resolution that upholds the principles of fairness and legality,” the statement concluded.

This clarification from the Keta Youth Association calls for accurate reporting and a thorough investigation into the incident to avoid further misinformation and unrest.
