GHS Warns of Rising Respiratory Infections Linked to hMPV

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has issued a press release cautioning the public about a rise in acute respiratory infection cases across the Northern Hemisphere, particularly due to the Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV). The outbreak, which began in late December 2024, has been observed mainly in China and other parts of the Northern Hemisphere.

The World Health Organization (WHO), in a January 7, 2025 update, stated that the increase in respiratory infections and pathogen detections during this period is seasonal and expected. However, GHS has emphasized the need for vigilance, especially as no unusual respiratory pathogens, including hMPV, have been detected in samples from Ghana’s 16 regions.

In response, the GHS has implemented measures to prevent and manage any potential cases, including:

Enhancing surveillance systems.

Expanding laboratory testing capacities.

Monitoring global trends in respiratory infections.

Raising public awareness.

The GHS also provided essential information on hMPV, noting that it is a common respiratory virus causing symptoms ranging from mild colds to severe respiratory distress. Vulnerable groups, including the elderly and individuals with underlying conditions such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, are at higher risk of severe illness.

To prevent infection, the GHS advises:

Practicing good respiratory hygiene.

Regular handwashing.

Avoiding touching the face.

Wearing face masks when necessary.

Seeking medical attention when symptoms develop.

The GHS assured the public of its commitment to safeguarding public health and promised regular updates on the situation.
