Conclave: Black smoke rises as first Conclave ballot fails to elect new Pope

No Pope was elected after the first ballot of the conclave to elect the 267th Pope.
Black smoke billowed from the chimney on top of the Sistine Chapel at 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, signaling that the first ballot of the Papal Conclave had ended without the election of a new Pope.
An estimated 45,000 faithfuls had filled St. Peter’s Square in anticipation of the announcement, which was initially expected shortly after 7:00 p.m. The crowd, however, had to wait two hours for confirmation that no decision had been reached.
