Bagre Dam to be opened Monday 19th August

SONABEL, the power utility company in Burkina Faso says they will begin spillage of water from the Bagre Dam from Monday, August 19, 2024.

In a statement dated August 16th 2024 made available to Veritas News GH, by the White Volta Basin Secretariat of the Water Resources Commission, said the update from SONABEL indicates that the current water level in the Bagre dam was 232.8 metres as at Friday August 2nd and keeps rising.

“The Water Resources Commission has been advised by SONABEL, the Power Utility of Burkina Faso on Friday, August 16th, 2024, that the level of water in the Bagre Dam has been rising since Friday, August 2nd, 2024”, it added.

An act which demands a necessary spillage

The spillage is expected to cause the White Volta River in Ghana to overflow its banks and occupy its normal flood plains, the statement added.

Residents living along the banks of the White Volta River are advised accordingly to take precautions to avoid being adversely affected.

“This is to inform you of your further action relating to flood management. We will furnish you with additional information on this matter as this becomes available to us,” it stressed.

The said letter was copied to the Regional Ministers, NADMO Directors, Municipal, and District Chief Executives in Upper East, North East and Northern Regions who are all expected to act accordingly.
