Anlo State, Family bids solemn farewell to Agbotadua Kumassah

Anloga, (V/R), March 30, GNA – The people of the Anlo State have paid their final respects to the late Agbotadua Kumassah. 

The ceremony brought to a close a series of solemn and culturally significant funeral rites held over the weekend in honour of the distinguished Anlo statesman. 

The three-day observance, marked by deep tradition, reflection and tribute, drew together chiefs, queenmothers, Agbotaduawo, family members and well-wishers from across Anloland and beyond, all united in celebrating a life of service, loyalty and cultural preservation. 

On Friday, an esteemed entourage of Agbotaduawo formally received the mortal remains of the late statesman into his private residence, amidst traditional drumming and dancing by mourners in his private residence at Vui, near the AME Zion School.  

In accordance with Anlo customs, sacred traditional rites were performed to usher him home and honour his status within the traditional hierarchy.  

The evening transitioned into a solemn vigil, enriched by choral ministrations from the choral groups, alongside traditional Borborbor performances, where he was laid for the public to pay their last respects  

Saturday’s activities featured a grand funeral service at the KETASCO Park, officiated by clergy of St. Peter Claver Cathedral.  

The ceremony was marked by heartfelt tributes from family members and key institutions, including the Awoamefia Secretariat, the Tay Agbozo Stool, the KETASCO community, and the Anlo-Dukor Agbotaduawo Council. 

In its tribute, the Anlo Traditional Council described the late Agbotadua Kumassah as “a formidable pillar in the preservation and promotion of Anlo-Ewe history and heritage,” noting that, he served not only as a spokesperson but as a repository of tradition and a reference point in matters of culture and statecraft. 

The Awoamefia Secretariat also praised his dedication and collaborative spirit, describing him as “an ardent and devoted team player” whose deep understanding of custom enhanced the work and outreach of the office. 

The Anlo-Dukor Agbotaduawo Council highlighted his advocacy for the recognition and strengthening of the Agbotadua institution, describing him as a passionate figure whose contributions will remain a lasting legacy. 

The funeral was attended not only by the general public but political figures and statesmen, among them was Mr Richard Sefe, the MP for Anlo Constituency; Mr Emmanuel Gemegah, former Municipal Chief Executive for Keta, Mr Innocent Augustt, the Headmaster Ketasco, among other dignitaries  

Awadada Togbi Agbesi Awusu II and Zikpitor Honourable Dan Abodakpi led the entourage of paramount chiefs, queens and the Agbotaduawo alongside Togbi Tay Agbozo IV whom Mr John Fred served as the stool Agbotadua or Lieutenant before his demise.  

The final rites concluded on Sunday with a thanksgiving and memorial service at the St. Peter Claver Cathedral in Dzelukope, offering a moment for reflection and celebration of a life well lived. 

The tributes, delivered by his wife and seven children during his funeral highlighted a life defined by unwavering faith, steadfast love, and selfless service to family, community, and faith. 

In her tribute, Mrs Kumassah described her late husband as a man of “unwavering faith and uncompromising love,” emphasising that his devotion to God guided every aspect of family life. 

 She reflected on how his faith shaped their home, inspired their decisions and left a lasting impact on all who knew him.  

She also praised his generosity and compassion, recalling how his selfless acts touched countless lives. 

“From the moment we met, your faith illuminated every aspect of our lives together,” she said, remembering his lifelong commitment to prayer, scripture, and living out the teachings of Christ.  

While acknowledging the deep void his passing has left in her life, she expressed comfort in knowing that he now rests in the arms of the Heavenly Father, free from pain and suffering. She affectionately described him as her “hero,” whose love remains “engraved in my heart forever.” 

The children of Agbotadua Kumassah echoed these sentiments, recalling their father as a source of guidance, strength, and inspiration. They noted that the past sixteen months had been among the most challenging of their lives, yet their father’s faith provided a constant source of purpose and direction. 

“Daddy, you were our shelter in life’s harshest moments,” describing him as the steady foundation of their family—fair, loving, and principled. 

 They highlighted his dedication to education, discipline, and the instilling of responsibility, respect, and integrity in his children. They affirmed that his teachings continue to shape their lives and will endure across generations. 

Beyond his role as a father, the children fondly recalled their father’s humour and warmth. They recounted how he brought joy to even the simplest moments, creating lasting memories.  

In closing, they honoured him with his favourite hymn, Catholic Hymnal 305, “Mido dzi de Yesufe nyanu,” as a testament to his faith and enduring influence. 

Agbotadua Kumassah, privately known as Mr John Fred Kwaku Kumassah, served as spokesperson and Public Relations Officer to the office of the Awoamefia, Togbi Sri III. Installed as Agbotadua in 1979, he was widely respected for his eloquence, leadership and commitment to the advancement of Anlo traditions. 

Born on 15 April 1943 at Anyako, he was a trained teacher who served in Ghana and Nigeria, notably at Keta Secondary School, and retired as a headmaster in 2003. 

 He was a devoted Roman Catholic, married with seven children, and served on the Keta District Assembly from 1988 to 1996, contributing to key development initiatives.  

He is credited with many works in History and Geography, including the iconic “Migration Saga of the Anlo-Ewe People”, “The Dilemma of the Anlo-Ewe Christian”, among many books  

His legacy, deeply rooted in service, cultural advocacy and statesmanship, will continue to resonate across generations in Anlo State and beyond.
