“THE PRICE OF LOVE”

A poem by Andrea Sandra Delali Gakpe

I’m lost in shadows, where love once shone—
A beauty lost to time, a heart forever scarred.
I yearn for whispers of a love that’s mine,
But silence screams, and I’m left to redefine.

The last time someone called me beautiful, I don’t recall—
A faded dream, slipping through my fingers,
But you never grasped it, nor gave at all.
When you didn’t say “I love you,” I knew it wasn’t true,
A love unspoken, a heart broken in two.

I’ve endured the pain—
In secret, in shame.
My heart grown lean,
From love’s relentless flame.

I’m not ill, just weary,
From giving love in vain—
A soul exhausted,
Loving without gain.

I give up on your love—
A possession I’ll never own.
A dream once bright,
Now lost its luster,
A heart turned cold as stone.

They say love is a flame,
But mine was just a flicker of pain.
It burned until it froze,
A fleeting ember that turned to frost.
Was I destined to love alone,
And lose everything,
Or could it have been different?
A love that promised warmth,
But mine was ice, a bitter pill—
A blind, regretful chase.

Eight years of sacrifice,
Of giving, of loving in vain,
Only to reap regret,
And a heart that’s lost its flame.

Tell me, why love again,
When all that’s left is dust?
