The Anlo Dukor (State) Council has appealed to the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, the Ghana Export-Import Bank (GEXIM) and other strategic stakeholders to support the construction of a modern sports complex at Keta in the Volta Region.
The Council said the proposed facility would help restore Keta’s sporting infrastructure, provide a structured platform for discovering and nurturing young talents, and strengthen the contribution of sports to the socio-economic development of the area and the country.
Awadada Togbi Agbesi Awusu II, who appealed on behalf of the Council, said Keta’s historical contribution to Ghanaian sports, coupled with its strong sporting culture, made the community deserving of a modern sporting facility.
He made the appeal on Thursday, August 6, 2026, at Anloga during the commissioning of the Awoamefia Togbi Sri III Astro Turf Park, a modern football facility developed from the historic Hogbe Park with support from GEXIM.
“As we commission this today, I would like us to consider a similar project for Keta. We used to have the London Park, which served as both a sports and event centre, but currently Keta has no standard field due to the destruction caused by the sea and its effects.”
Togbi Agbesi Awusu II said the absence of a standard sporting facility in Keta had created a significant infrastructure gap, particularly for young people seeking opportunities to develop their talents in football, athletics and other sporting disciplines.
He noted that Anlo had historically produced athletes and sports personalities who had distinguished themselves at the national level, arguing that the provision of modern infrastructure could help revive and sustain that tradition.
In an exclusive engagement with him after the ceremony, Togbi cited the contribution of renowned Ghanaian athletes such as Michael Ahey, Godwin Adukpo, among other sports personalities from the area, as evidence of the sporting potential that existed within Anlo.
The Keta Sports Complex
According to him, investing in sporting infrastructure should not be viewed merely as the provision of recreational facilities but as a strategic investment in youth development, talent identification, employment and the local economy, saying the Keta Sports Complex initiative must be revived to fix this gap and make the area a hub of talent development and event hub
The call has received support from Togbi James-Ocloo V, Paramount Chief of Keta, who also backed the proposal for the development of a state-of-the-art sports complex in the municipality.
In a similar engagement with veritasnewsgh, the Paramount Chief said a modern sporting facility would provide the necessary infrastructure to consolidate Keta’s growing reputation as a major center for sports, particularly beach soccer. Togbi lamented the delay in seeing the Keta Sports Complex project materialise
About 35 acres of land have reportedly been earmarked at Keta Central, at a location behind the Keta Nursing and Midwifery Training College (Keta NMTC), for the proposed “Keta Sports Complex” for approximately five years, but the project is yet to attract the comprehensive investment required for its development.
Stakeholders believe the development of the site into a modern multi-purpose sporting facility could transform Keta into a major sports and sports-tourism hub, with the potential to attract national competitions, clubs and national teams.
Keta has in recent years strengthened its reputation as a stronghold of traditional soccer and beach soccer, with a significant proportion of players associated with Ghana’s national beach soccer team, the Black Sharks, originating from Keta-Anlo.
The community has also hosted national beach soccer competitions and produced players who have contributed significantly to the performance of teams in national Division Two, One, and the Premier League national competitions.
Togbi Agbesi Awusu II therefore urged stakeholders to seize the opportunity to complement the investment made at Anloga with a similar intervention in Keta.
“The development of a sports complex in Keta will not only give our young people a place to play; it will give them a place to dream, train and compete. It can become an investment in talent, discipline, livelihoods and the future of our communities.”
Building on the Anloga Investment
The appeal follows the transformation of the historic Hogbe Park at Anloga into a modern football facility through an intervention by GEXIM.
The Anloga facility, commissioned on August 6, 2026, has been named the Awoamefia Togbi Sri III Astro Turf Park, in honour of the current Awoamefia of Anlo due to his role in making the project a reality
For the Anlo Dukor Council, extending such investments to Keta and other Anlo communities would create a broader sporting infrastructure network capable of supporting talent development across Anlo.
Togbi Agbesi Awusu II said the success of the Anloga project should serve as an encouragement for stakeholders to consider similar long-term investments in communities where sporting talent and infrastructure needs remain significant.
“If we can transform a historic sporting ground in Anloga into a modern facility, then we can also dream of giving other Anlo towns a sporting complex worthy of its history and its people. Our young people deserve infrastructure that matches their talent and ambition.”
He specifically called on the Government, GEXIM, the private sector, traditional authorities and other development partners to collaborate towards making the proposed Keta sports complex a reality.
