GIZ indicates strong media is key to Ghana’s democracy and public finance accountability

The GIZ-PAIReD programme has indicated that a strong and independent media is essential to Ghana’s democracy, public finance accountability and good governance.
Speaking at a capacity-building workshop for journalists on public financial management, Dr. Juergen Eheke, Component Manager for GIZ-PAIReD, indicated that Ghana as a democratic state needs checks and balances, and that a functioning press is central to making government work effectively for the people.
He indicated that the training was designed to help journalists ask the right questions, explain public issues clearly to citizens and deepen scrutiny of state institutions.
According to him, the initiative is especially important at a time when government is active on public investment, taxation and expenditure, making it necessary for the media to be well equipped to report on those matters.
“This is a contribution to good governance in Ghana, and it will help journalists ask the right questions and give the right explanations to the people.”
Dr. Eheke said Ghana has made progress over the years, but there is still room for improvement and development remains a long-term process. He added that GIZ’s role is to support the country with advice and reforms that can help it take the next steps toward better development outcomes.
The workshop was organised under the PAIReD programme, with support from Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the European Union in Ghana and the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO).
GIZ-PAIReD (Participation, Accountability and Integrity for a Resilient Democracy) is a governance programme implemented in Ghana by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).
