Mahama Clears Path for Massive Teacher Recruitment to Tackle Placement Backlog

Peki (Volta Region) —July 2026

President John Dramani Mahama has announced the government’s clearance for the recruitment of newly trained teachers and graduates from colleges of education as part of efforts to address the long-standing backlog of qualified teachers awaiting employment.

The President said the recruitment of at least 16,000 graduates who are currently at home is a move aimed at creating employment opportunities for trained professionals while strengthening Ghana’s education sector by ensuring that schools have the needed human resources.

He announced during a visit to the Peki College of Education in the Volta Region on Thursday as part of his two-day “Resetting Ghana” tour, where he inspected progress on the construction of a new 1,500-capacity multipurpose assembly hall.

“We are trying to clear the backlog of your seniors. We have given clearance to the Ministry of Education to start recruiting at least 16,000 new teachers,” President Mahama said.

President Mahama, who interacted with students and staff of the college, expressed satisfaction with the progress and quality of work on the project, stressing that improved educational infrastructure remains essential to enhancing teaching and learning outcomes.

He further assured trainee teachers that the government was committed to improving conditions across colleges of education through investments in classrooms, accommodation facilities and other critical infrastructure.

“We are trying to improve the learning conditions in all colleges of education; we are building hostels, classrooms and other facilities, and your institution is not going to be left out,” Mr Mahama assured.

The President encouraged trainee teachers to remain committed to their studies and strive for excellence, noting that Ghana’s future depends on a skilled, dedicated and well-trained workforce.

The recruitment announcement comes amid years of concerns over the unemployment situation among graduates of colleges of education, with many trained teachers remaining unemployed after completing their programmes. Stakeholders have consistently linked the shortage of teachers in some schools, particularly at the basic level, to delays in recruiting qualified personnel into the public education system.
