Management of KETASCO challenges Sharks Quiz Tie-Break re-run, demands declaration as Winners

The Management of Keta Senior High Technical School (KETASCO) has formally rejected the decision to re-run the tie-breaker in its quarterfinal contest against St. Augustine’s College, describing the move as unfair and inconsistent with established quiz procedures.

In an official letter dated March 20, 2026, signed by Mr Innocent Augustt (Headteacher of the School) and addressed to the Academic Talent Development Programme, KETASCO expressed both pride in its team’s performance and deep concern over what it calls a controversial ruling that has overshadowed the outcome of the contest held on Wednesday March 19.

Background to the Controversy

The dispute stems from a decisive tie-breaker stage during the quarterfinals of the ongoing Sharks Quiz competition.

Keta Senior High Technical School provided the correct answer first during the tie-breaker, but the response was initially rejected by the quiz mistress which she later posed a question to AUGUSCO which was answered as correctly as well.

A protest was launched and a subsequent review and official statement by the Jury and Academic Board confirmed that KETASCO’s answer was “valid, accurate and deserving of acceptance.” Despite this acknowledgment, organizers then announced a decision to re-run the tie-breaker on Monday March 23, 2026, to conclusively determine the winner between the two schools.

KETASCO’s Position

KETASCO strongly opposes the decision to re-run the tie-breaker, arguing that once their answer was validated, the contest should have been considered concluded in their favour.

The school maintains that: The correct answer was provided first by KETASCO during the tie-breaker, that The Jury and Academic Board’s admission of its correctness effectively settled the contest.

That Any subsequent questions or attempts after the validated answer are irrelevant, given the nature of tie-breaker rules.

Management further contends that standard quiz practice requires that once a correct tie-break response is confirmed, the responding team should be awarded maximum points and declared winner immediately.

Based on these arguments, the Keta based School is calling on the Jury and Academic Board to rescind the decision to re-run the tie-breaker and instead declare the school the rightful winner of the contest.

“In the interest of fairness and preserving the integrity of the competition, the earlier ruling should be overturned,” Mr Augustt stated

Beyond the immediate outcome, KETASCO has also raised broader concerns about how the situation was handled. The school has urged quiz authorities to ensure that protests are addressed promptly and transparently, with findings communicated publicly before final results are announced.

The dispute has also sparked wider debate about adjudication standards and procedural consistency in academic quiz competitions. As anticipation builds ahead of the scheduled re-run, all eyes remain on the organizers to determine whether they will uphold their decision or reconsider KETASCO’s appeal.

For now, KETASCO’s position remains clear: the contest was already decided on merit, and any attempt to replay the tie-breaker undermines both fairness and the integrity of the competition.
