25-year-old arrested for possession of firearms at Asankare

The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has arrested 25-year-old Usif Mohammed for unlawful possession of firearms during a routine checkpoint operation at the Asankare Police Barrier.
According to Deputy Regional Commander ACP Cephas Arthur, officers conducting a routine search discovered a cache of weapons concealed in Mohammed’s travel bag as he journeyed from Kumasi to Accra. The arrest was announced during a press briefing in Bekwai.
The suspect, Yussif Mohammed, who was on board an Accra-bound bus from the Kumasi direction, was arrested on May 8, 2025, at the Asankare Police Barrier when the backpack containing the ammunition and other items fell from the bus.
This incident drew the attention of police officers who were on duty nearby to rush to the scene and conduct a search of the backpack of which Usif Mohammed admitted ownership of.
According to the Police, the items found on him include: two empty CZ magazines, an empty G3 magazine, two G3 magazines loaded with eight rounds of ammunition each, one round of BB ammunition, and thirty-five rounds of CZ ammunition.
Other items included two smocks with talismans embedded in them, two pairs of military trousers, and boots. forty-two rounds of AK-47 ammunition, ninety-seven rounds of G3 ammunition, and sixteen rounds of red-headed G3 ammunition, a quantity of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, a bulletproof vest, two black jackets, a green jacket, and a crash helmet.
ACP Cephas Arthur, during the press briefing, says they are interrogating the suspect to discover more information and other possible suspects as he is processed for court.
This incident underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to curb the illegal circulation of firearms, which poses a significant threat to public safety.
Investigations into Mohammed’s case are ongoing, as authorities seek to determine the source of the firearms and any potential links to broader criminal networks.
