25 Agona Swedru SHS final-year students suspended over same-sex proposal fight

The Headmistress of Agona Swedru Senior High School, Mrs. Golda Esi Andam, has confirmed the indefinite suspension of 25 final-year students following a violent altercation that reportedly began with a same-sex relationship proposal.

Mrs. Andam explained that the students involved were granted a fair disciplinary hearing before the decision was taken. “These students will be allowed to write their final examinations under the escort of their parents,” she said, adding that the incident highlights the seriousness with which the Ghana Education Service (GES) views breaches of its code of conduct.

According to school authorities, the disturbance began after a male student allegedly approached another male student with a romantic proposal. The recipient of the proposal, uncomfortable with the situation, confided in his friends.

Those friends are reported to have advised him to accept the proposal in order to lure the other student into a trap.

On the agreed meeting day, a group of students believed to be associated with the student who had declined the proposal confronted and physically assaulted the one who made the approach.

In retaliation, the assaulted student reportedly rallied his dormitory mates, leading to a counterattack. The situation quickly escalated into a broader clash between groups of students, creating chaos on campus.

The school administration intervened and took immediate disciplinary action, resulting in the suspension of all 25 students involved.

Mrs. Andam reiterated that the disciplinary measure was necessary to maintain order and discipline within the school environment.

She also clarified that while the students are suspended, they are not being denied their right to education.

“We want all students to understand that discipline and adherence to school rules are critical for their success and for maintaining a safe learning environment,” she added.
