Vegetable farmers in the Anloga District of the Volta Region have begun the heavy harvesting of tomatoes, announcing the availability of fresh produce and calling on buyers from across the country to come and patronise their harvest.
The harvesting season, which commenced a few days ago, has resulted in significant volumes of tomatoes becoming available across major farming communities in the district, particularly Tegbi, Woe, Anloga and its surrounding areas.
The farmers say they are ready to engage directly with traders, wholesalers, retailers, institutions and other potential buyers as they seek reliable markets for their produce.
Mr. Godfred Afetorgbor, Public Relations Officer of the Southern Sector Vegetable Farmers and Marketers Association, told VeritasNewsGH.com on Monday that farmers in the area were prepared to do business with buyers from all parts of the country.
“We are ready to do business with customers from across the country. Our farmers have started harvesting, and we are calling on buyers to come and patronise the produce; exporters, hotels, restaurants and other interested buyers are welcome to come around,” he said.
His appeal comes weeks after the Association held an engagement with farmers and other stakeholders in August to discuss arrangements and standards in anticipation of the year’s tomato trade.
At the meeting, the Association urged farmers and loaders to adhere strictly to the agreed standard dimensions for tomato crates to promote uniformity and fairness in the trade. The standard crate was agreed to measure 2 feet by 2 feet square.
Mr Afetorgbor also announced the agreed prices for the different varieties of tomatoes. He said a standard 2-by-2-foot crate of hybrid tomatoes would sell for GH¢3,200, while a crate of the local variety would cost GH¢3,000. This price, he says, was agreed upon by the farmers and other stakeholders as at Wednesday, 2nd September, 2026 and may be subject to change based on the availability and quantity of harvests
He further cautioned farmers against allowing loading boys and middlemen to determine the prices of their produce, stressing the need for all parties to adhere to the agreed loading quantities and pricing arrangements.
Some farmers at Woe Aklorbordzi also expressed optimism about the season and said they were looking forward to attracting more buyers to the area as harvesting intensifies.
The farmers therefore appealed to traders and other potential off-takers across Ghana to take advantage of the current harvest and visit the farming communities to purchase directly from them.
