Mr Felix Akakpo Akonta, Youth and Development Chief of Aflao in the Ketu South Municipality, has supported some Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) graduates with essential items to ease the financial burden on families and facilitate their transition to Senior High School (SHS).
The items, presented at a ceremony at the Viepe School Park on Friday September 11th, included three hundred and ten (310) mattresses, school trunks, chop boxes and buckets for each of the beneficiaries.
The initiative marks a significant expansion of Mr Akonta’s educational support programme, which benefited 50 students in 2025.
During the presentation, He said the intervention was motivated by the financial difficulties faced by some families in providing basic requirements for their children entering SHS.
He said no child should be forced to abandon further education because their parents could not afford essential items needed for boarding school.
“Many students pass the BECE with flying colours, but the journey to Senior High School becomes difficult because parents have to find money for mattresses, trunks, chop boxes, uniforms and other essentials.
“Some brilliant children stay at home, not because they failed, but because they lack these basic items. That ends today, at least for these 310,” he said.
Mr Akonta, known by his chieftaincy title as Torgbi Tenuvi II, described the initiative as an investment in the future of Ketu South and urged the beneficiaries to take their education seriously and aspire to become professionals and responsible community leaders.
He encouraged them to return to their communities after their education and contribute to local development.
As part of the programme, some forty six (46) outstanding graduates among them were recognised for their academic performance with citations and cash awards.
He also recognised the efforts of some staff who were identified as making significant contributions towards the success of their students across the municipality.
Seven laptop computers were also presented to four headteachers and three School Improvement Support Officers (SISOs) in recognition of their contribution to educational supervision and administration.
In an engagement with the Veritas News GH on Saturday, Mr Akonta appealed to individuals and organisations in Ketu South, both in Ghana and abroad, to support efforts to keep children in school.
He said government alone could not address all the challenges confronting education, stressing the need for collective intervention.
“If we all support one child, we can eliminate dropout after the Basic Education Certificate Examination,” he said.
Mr Akonta further assured the beneficiaries that the initiative would be sustained, pledging continued investment in education and youth development.
This version gives the donation itself and its impact on families greater prominence while keeping the recognition of teachers and outstanding students as supporting developments.
