The Assemblymember for the Liati Dafornu Electoral Area in the Afadzato South District, Hon. George Hodzi, has appealed to the government to urgently rehabilitate major roads serving the area, warning that their deteriorating condition is stifling economic activity, tourism and the overall well-being of residents.
According to Mr. Hodzi, the Agbonyra–Wote, Soba–Dafornu and Fodome Torkorme roads have become severely deplorable, making transportation difficult and discouraging investment in the area.
He said the poor road network has significantly undermined the tourism potential of the electoral area, noting that renowned attractions such as Mount Afadza, Tagbo Falls, the Snake Zoo, as well as tourist sites in Wote and Soba, continue to attract fewer visitors because of the poor accessibility.
“Our roads have become a major barrier to development. Tourists are staying away, farmers are losing income, businesses are struggling, and residents are paying the price for years of neglect. Government must act now before these communities are completely cut off.”
Mr. Hodzi also said farmers and traders are bearing the brunt of the poor infrastructure, explaining that transporting foodstuffs and other goods to markets has become increasingly difficult and costly, resulting in reduced incomes and slower local economic growth.
He noted that the situation worsens during the rainy season, when large sections of the roads become nearly impassable. The deteriorating roads, he added, have also forced commercial drivers to charge higher fares to offset the frequent repair costs caused by the rough terrain, placing an additional financial burden on commuters.
Beyond the road challenges, the Assemblymember highlighted persistent shortages of potable water and poor telecommunication network coverage in the communities of Wote, Dafornu and Soba. He said residents continue to struggle to access clean water, while unreliable mobile network services hinder communication, digital transactions and other daily activities.
“Development cannot thrive where people lack good roads, clean water and reliable network connectivity. The people of Wote, Soba and Dafornu deserve the same basic infrastructure enjoyed elsewhere, and we are calling on government to urgently address these longstanding challenges.”
Mr. Hodzi expressed concern that repeated appeals to the appropriate authorities have produced little progress, with assurances often ending in promises that the issues remain under consideration.
He therefore called on the government and relevant stakeholders to prioritise the rehabilitation of the road network, improve water supply systems and strengthen telecommunications infrastructure to improve livelihoods and unlock the area’s tourism and economic potential.
