Tie-Break Controversy Forces Re-Run of KETASCO–AUGUSCO Sharks Quiz Quarterfinal

The organizers of the Sharks Quiz have ordered a re-run of the decisive tie-breaker between Keta Senior High Technical School (KETASCO) and St. Augustine’s College (AUGUSCO), following a formal protest and a subsequent review of a disputed answer that influenced the outcome of their quarterfinal contest.

In a press statement issued and copied to the Ghana News Agency, the Sharks Quiz Academic Board explained that the contest, which was closely fought, progressed to a tie-breaker stage after both schools delivered strong performances.

“During this phase, contestants were presented with a sequence of questions spanning Science, Mathematics, English, and General Knowledge. However, both teams failed to correctly answer the initial Science and Mathematics questions, it said.

The controversy arose during the English segment when contestants were asked: “In Greek tragedy, what term described the moment of highest tension in the plot?” KETASCO responded with “Climax,” an answer that was not accepted at the time. The contest proceeded, allowing AUGUSCO to answer a subsequent General Knowledge question, after which they were declared winners.

Dissatisfied with the ruling, a formal protest was lodged, prompting a comprehensive review by the Quiz Jury and Academic Board. The review involved a detailed examination of literary definitions and accepted interpretations within Greek tragedy and general narrative structure.

According to the Board’s findings, while “Peripeteia” specifically denoted a reversal of fortune in Greek tragedy, “Climax” was also widely recognised in literary analysis as the point of highest tension in a plot. This broader interpretation, the Board noted, was applicable to Greek tragedy as well. Based on this assessment, the Academic Board concluded that KETASCO’s response was valid, accurate, and should have been accepted during the contest.

In the interest of fairness and to uphold the integrity of the competition, the Board has therefore resolved that the tie-breaker stage be re-run. The re-match is scheduled for Monday, 23rd March 2026, where both schools will once again compete to determine the rightful winner of the quarterfinal encounter.

The statement acknowledged the exceptional performance, discipline, and sportsmanship exhibited by both KETASCO and AUGUSCO throughout the contest. It emphasised that the decision reflected the organisers’ commitment to fairness, academic rigor, and transparent adjudication, expressing appreciation to stakeholders and supporters for their understanding.

Meanwhile, authorities at Keta Senior High Technical School have expressed reservations about the decision to re-run the tie-breaker. The school maintained that since its answer had been officially reviewed and declared correct, it should have been awarded victory without the need for a replay.

The development has sparked mixed reactions on the KETASCO campus, with several staff and students reportedly calling for the school to be declared outright winners of the contest.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr Gbadago Prince, a coordinator of the KETASCO quiz team, said the school remained committed to due process and is closely monitoring developments to ensure that fairness ultimately prevailed in the competition.
