Volta Region launches National Apprenticeship Programme

Ho, Ghana – August 23, 2025 —
In a significant stride toward addressing youth unemployment and revitalizing technical and vocational education in Ghana, the Volta Region officially launched the National Apprenticeship Programme (NAP) today with a vibrant matriculation and induction ceremony at the Jubilee Park in Ho.
The event marked the formal enrollment of 2,060 apprentices into the programme’s pilot phase in the region. These apprentices will undergo practical, competency-based training under the guidance of 412 seasoned Master Craft Persons across various trades.
The ceremony was graced by key dignitaries, including the Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, and the Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority (NYA), Hon. Osman Abdulai Ayariga. Also in attendance were traditional leaders, stakeholders from the private sector, educators, and enthusiastic community members.
In his keynote address, Hon. James Gunu hailed the initiative as a “pivotal moment” for the region’s socio-economic advancement. He emphasized that the programme forms part of a broader national agenda spearheaded by President John Dramani Mahama’s administration to confront the pressing challenge of youth unemployment.
“This programme is not just a skills initiative—it is an investment in the future of our young people and the economy of the Volta Region,” Hon. Gunu said. “With a dedicated GH¢300 million allocation in the 2025 national budget, the National Apprenticeship Programme represents a strategic response to joblessness and underemployment among Ghana’s youth.”
Hon. Osman Ayariga echoed these sentiments, describing the initiative as one of the “boldest expressions” of the NYA’s commitment to youth empowerment.
“The National Apprenticeship Programme is a bridge—between raw talent and employable skills, between dreams and livelihoods, between potential and prosperity,” he stated. “It aligns perfectly with the Volta Region’s heritage of resilience, craftsmanship, and industriousness. The youth here are disciplined, focused, and ready to lead Ghana’s transformation.”
Under the programme, apprentices will receive free, high-quality training tailored to meet current labor market demands. In addition to monthly stipends to ease financial burdens during their training, beneficiaries will be provided with essential start-up equipment upon successful completion to launch their own businesses or integrate into the workforce.

The highlight of the day included the administration of a matriculation pledge by the newly enrolled apprentices, symbolizing their commitment to discipline, learning, and ethical craftsmanship. Each apprentice also received an official identification card and starter training materials in a symbolic presentation to mark the beginning of their transformative journey.
Stakeholders expressed optimism that the NAP would not only reduce unemployment but also stimulate entrepreneurship, reduce poverty, and promote sustainable development across the region and the nation at large.
As the programme kicks off in the Volta Region, expectations are high that it will serve as a model for successful youth skills development and economic inclusion, paving the way for national expansion in the months ahead.
